About BOLD – Bay Area Discovery Museum

About BOLD

The Bay Area Discovery Museum has always been guided by bold vision and forward thinking. Through BOLD: Spark Curiosity, Inspire Innovation, we are raising funds to invest in a campus-wide renovation that features five research-backed new exhibits that children and caregivers will be wowed by from the first moment they walk through the door, as well as improved amenities, and a better visitor experience.

Our partner in this work is world-renowned architecture firm Olson Kundig, led by architect Alan Maskin. In collaboration with early learning experts from our in-house research division, the Olson Kundig team has designed an updated BADM campus that will fuse together expertise in architectural design and early STEM learning.

Watch Our Reimagined Campus Come to Life

Features of Our Reimagined Campus
  • A new, bigger Lookout Cove boat
  • The new Try It Studio, which will house a new exhibit and BADM’s high-tech WorkShop
  • A new classroom space for schoolchildren participating in our award-winning STEM programs
  • New Bay-themed and Forest-themed exhibits in our toddler-only space, Tot Spot
  • A new How Things Work exhibit that removes the outer shell of household objects to reveal their inner workings and inspire children’s curiosity
  • Gumnut Grove, a new outdoor exhibit for older children ages 5-10
Creative Learning Through Research-Backed Design

Each of the five new exhibits is research-backed and designed to fully engage children and spark their curiosity through interactive activities that incorporate age-appropriate early learning skills. Children will be able to decide for themselves what’s interesting or exciting, and then seek opportunities for deeper exploration. By investing in these kinds of high-quality early learning experiences for children, we are setting them up for future success.

We know that an understanding of STEM-based concepts begins in infancy, but there is a lack of experiences designed to foster these skills for children 0-10, when brain development is most robust. This campus-wide renovation—in addition to our institutional expertise, history of innovation, and bold vision for the future—will establish BADM’s legacy as a resource for the children, families, and educators of the Bay Area and beyond.
