Explanation and Exploration Play Important Role in Children’s Creativity & Problem Solving

Center for Childhood Creativity outlines key research findings on helping kids develop creative problem solving skills

Sausalito, CA – The Center for Childhood Creativity (CCC), the research division of the Bay Area Discovery Museum, launched its second edition of the Creativity Trend Report, a report that shares recent and innovative research with practical applications for designing experiences and products promoting learning and creative problem solving for children.

The Creativity Trend Report is designed for children’s product and media designers, education leaders, and curriculum developers. The report features three research topics: children’s ability to interpret information as real or pretend on TV programming; the role adults play in children’s learning in museum settings; and the ways in which explanation and exploration influence children’s understanding of cause and effect.

In addition, there is a special section written by Sandra W. Russ, Ph.D., a leading scholar on creativity, where she shares her seminal research and insights on the relationship between emotion, pretend play, and the development of creativity.

“We hope that our new Creativity Trend Report helps children’s product and media designers, education leaders, and curriculum developers link research and practice, leading to experiences and products that spark children’s curiosity and nurture their creative spirit,” says Helen Hadani, Ph.D., Head of Research at the Center for Childhood Creativity at the Bay Area Discovery Museum.
