November Classes

Elastic Engineering (Ages 3-6)

In this class, children ages 3-6 and their caregivers will use the Fab Lab’s technology and the engineering design process of “think, make, try,” to solve creative problems. In Elastic Engineering, children and their caregivers will explore the properties of elasticity before building creative contraptions that can fly through the air. They’ll test out their designs, experimenting with different variables to see what helps their flying contraption go the farthest. At the end of class, children will take their creations with them, so they can propel their curiosity at home.

Caregivers must remain in the Fab Lab with their children for the duration of this class. One adult per two children is required.

Laser Cutter: Puzzle Pieces (Ages 6-10)

In this class, children ages 6-10 will learn a unique skill through in-depth experience with a piece of Fab Lab equipment. At the end of class, they’ll take home an object they’ve created on one of the machines. Children will explore the principles of design—making a prototype, testing their ideas—before planning out their own wooden puzzle pieces and transferring them to the laser cutter. At the end of the class, children will have gained the hands-on experience to understand the basics of how this piece of equipment works.

Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult during these classes, though adults must remain on-site for the duration.

December Classes

Gliders (Ages 3-6)

Children and caregivers will design the body and wings for their very own glider, and see their ideas brought to life using high and low-tech tools. Once the machines are assembled, it’s time to take flight! Children will test multiple variables to see how they impact the way their glider soars, and make observations each time. At the end of the class, they’ll take their creations with them so they can continue flying.

Caregivers must remain in the Fab Lab with their children for the duration of this class. One adult per two children is required.

Sewing: Charity Bear (Ages 6-10)

Make a bear for someone in need this holiday season. Children will get hands-on practice sewing by hand and using the Fab Lab’s sewing machine during our special Charity Bear workshop. After exploring patterns, piecing, embroidery, and applique, children will apply what they’ve learned to create a bear to take home. For every bear made in class, BADM will give one to a child in need in our community.

Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult during these classes, though adults must remain on-site for the duration.

About the Fab Lab

Fab Labs are maker spaces with digital fabrication technology such as 3-D printers, laser cutters, and vinyl cutters. Our Fab Lab is the world’s first for early learning, enabling children to intentionally build science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills through hands-on learning. Exhibit entry is free for members and included in the price of museum admission.
