Weaving
Even toddlers can become master weavers, on a loom made just for them! In this weaving activity, demonstrated above by BADM’s Christina Sheils, your child gets comfortable with a simple, “under, over” motion which builds their confidence to take on complex weaving skills.
Learning Goals
- Be Curious
- Take Risks and Persist Through Challenge
Tips for Adults
- By using words like “over, under” you are building your child’s spatial reasoning skills, or the ability to think about objects in 3 dimensions.
- Encourage children to ask a lot of questions, especially if weaving is a brand-new activity for them. And don’t worry if you don’t know the answer! Respond by saying something like, “That’s a great question. I don’t know the answer. How could we find out together?”
Materials Required
- A rectangle of thick paper to use for your loom base, such as:
- Cardstock
- Cereal box
- Postcard
- Packaging
- Box cutter, Exact-o-Knife, or scissors
- Weaving materials, such as strips of yarn, cardstock, magazines, or natural materials
