My Sky – Bay Area Discovery Museum

My Sky

The phenomena of the night sky may seem far away, but interactive activities can bring them within reach! At BADM’s new traveling exhibit, My Sky, families can have fun and learn something new as they explore far-off wonders like the Sun, Moon, and stars right here on Earth.

My Sky was produced by Boston Children’s Museum in collaboration with Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and NASA. The exhibit encourages visitors to have fun becoming active “doers” of science, as they sharpen their observation skills, make predictions, and notice patterns!

This exhibit is free for BADM members and included in the price of museum admission.

Watch: My Sky

Visitors to My Sky will explore three unique settings that are perfect for creative science learning, and encourage children to engage with the sky above them in new ways.

Skate Park

Believe it or not, a skate park is the perfect place to explore the Sun! In this interactive exhibit space, visitors don’t just watch the Sun – they are the Sun! By standing on a skateboard, children can create a human sundial and watch as their shadow changes throughout a simulated day!

Child’s Room

If you’ve ever wanted to leave a lasting mark on the universe, this is your chance! In a child’s bedroom, visitors will be inspired by the actual stars to invent a constellation of their own imagination. To explore the phases of the moon, take a seat at the bedroom desk and turn a Moon-Earth model – different phases of the Moon will appear through the bedroom window!

Backyard

There’s nothing better than camping under the stars in the backyard, especially in a backyard like this one! Explore a dome featuring a topographically accurate scale model of the moon, a 24-hour day-in-the-life time lapse of the sky, and, of course, a campfire scene with tents where children can use telescopes to see the stars and planets in their real-time position in the sky.

My Sky, in collaboration with Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and NASA, was developed by Boston Children’s Museum.
