Announcing BADM’s New Chief Executive Officer

The Bay Area Discovery Museum is excited to share that Kelly McKinley has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of BADM, beginning January 2020. Ms. McKinley joins BADM after six years at the Oakland Museum of California (OCMA), where she served as deputy director.  She replaced current BADM CEO Karyn Flynn, who announced in April of this year that she would be stepping down at the end of 2019.

This is a particularly exciting time in BADM’s history to be welcoming new leadership, as BADM is in the process of opening four new, innovative STEM exhibits for its audience of children 0-10 and their families. In the past few years, BADM has also experienced significant growth in its school and community partnership programs, reaching more than 26,000 children around the Bay Area through STEM Workshops and Try It Truck visits. The museum’s on-site attendance exceeds 350,000 visitors annually, including 10,000 BADM member households and more than 80,000 visitors who qualify for free or reduced admission. The museum also recently announced the national expansion of its Reimagining School Readiness Toolkit, which will be rolled out to libraries in 18 states over the next three years. All of us at the museum are excited to welcome Ms. McKinley’s new ideas and energy as we continue to build on our more than 30 years as a part of the Bay Area community.

As a San Francisco resident and former BADM user, Ms. McKinley has a deep understanding of what makes BADM special. We look forward to continuing to share the experiences that families love under her leadership.

Thank you for your continued support of BADM as we take this exciting next step!
