Field Trips to the Museum
Our hands-on STEAM Workshops and self-guided Discover-It-Yourself field trips are designed to inspire curiosity and creativity in your students. Whether helping solve tricky engineering challenges for fairytale friends or exploring Discovery Zones at their own pace, there are endless opportunities for students to engage in play-based learning at the museum!

Discover-It-Yourself Field Trips

You don’t have to participate in a workshop to immerse your students in a world of hands-on STEAM learning and play! Our self-guided Discover-It-Yourself (DIY) Field Trips provide the perfect opportunity for small group exploration of the museum’s Discovery Zones at a discounted rate. DIYs are a safe and easy field trip option for preschools, early elementary classrooms and childcare centers looking for a shared educational outing that supports every type of learner.

Program Details

Availability: Wednesday – Friday

Timing: Six time slots are offered each day,
starting at 9:30 am, 10:00 am, 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 12 pm and 1 pm

Length: 2.5 hour sessions

Grade levels: Preschool – 5th grade

Group size: 10 – 80 students; minimum of 1 adult for every 5 students required

Price: $12 per person (including all children, staff and chaperones)

Scholarships

The scholarship rate is $6/person. Scholarships are reserved for Title-1 and other schools and organizations that serve communities with large populations of low-income families (40% or higher). PreK-TK STEAM Workshops at the Museum

Registration for 2025-26 School Year Opens August 12, at 8AM

Bring early STEAM learning to life for your preschoolers! DRDP- and PLF-aligned, our hands-on PreK-TK STEAM Workshops encourage curiosity and creativity in a classroom space designed for little learners. And the fun doesn’t stop there! After your workshop, stay to enjoy the museum’s play-based Discovery Zones.

Program Details

Availability: Thursdays and Fridays

Timing: Two time slots are offered each day, with groups arriving at 9:15 AM and 11 AM.

Length: 40-minute workshop plus open exploration of the museum. 

Grade levels: Preschoool – TK

Group size: Up to 30 students per workshop; 1 adult required for every 5 students. Our Little Learner classroom has limited capacity, so please consider this when recruiting additional chaperones.

Price: $585 per workshop, including museum admission for all students and adults.

Scholarships

The scholarship rate is $350/session. Scholarships are reserved for Title-1 and other schools and organizations that serve communities with large populations of low-income families (40% or higher).

Workshop Themes

Nature Lab: Students explore nature-based activity stations, prompted by our inquisitive puppet friend, Naturalist Mo. Students will build science processing skills by asking questions, making observations, and experimenting with tools.

Más Math: Following a circle time featuring our ladybug puppet friend, Emilio, students explore fun, tactile stations that strengthen their understanding of numbers and the mathematical concept of quantity. 

TK Fairy Tale Engineering (TK Only): Student engineers practice the Bay Area Discovery Museum’s Think, Make, Try® engineering design process as they work collaboratively to solve problems for their fairytale friends.

K-3rd STEAM Workshops at the Museum

Registration Opens August 12, at 8AM for the 2025-26 School Year.

NGSS-aligned and designed with early elementary students in mind, our hands-on workshops support active learning in the perfect play-based environment, the museum! Students will practice foundational STEAM skills, like creative thinking and collaborative problem-solving, all while having a great time. And the fun doesn’t stop there! All workshops include the opportunity to explore the museum’s many exciting Discovery Zones.

Program Details

Fairy Tale Engineering: Student engineers practice the Bay Area Discovery Museum’s Think, Make, Try® engineering design process as they work collaboratively to solve problems for a set of beloved fairytale friends.

Science Theater: Following an interactive shadow puppet experience, student engineers will use the Bay Area Discovery Museum’s Think, Make, Try® engineering design process to help solve problems for Lottie and her river friends.

Explore the Shore: Student biologists investigate the plants and animals living along the shoreline of nearby Horseshoe Cove (a short walk from the museum campus).
