Bay Area Camps for Kids During Winter Break

Winter Camps

BADM offers various school-year camps for children ages 4 – 8. Winter Discovery Camps run in December, January, and February. Discovery Camps provide child-directed, inquiry driven learning through project-based, hands-on activities designed to intentionally boost creativity, STEM skills, and critical thinking. Children come away with the skills and tools to support lifelong discoveries.

Winter Break Camp Week 1 (December 19 – 23)

December 19 – 23, 2016

Ages: 4 – 8

9 a.m. – 2 p.m.; Extended Care 2 – 4 p.m.

Camp Theme: Mystery Masters

In Mystery Masters, campers learn detective and investigator skills as they solve for hidden clues and messages across the museum. Camp activities include creating secret messages and codes, solving riddles and puzzles, creating mazes, and tinkering with old electronics. Families receive email communication each week summarizing the campers’ unique experiences.

Price: $450 for general admission; $425 for Supporting Family Members; $50 per day for extended care

Camp Theme: Magic Chemistry

In Magic Chemistry, campers discover the wonders and joy of chemistry by using various scientific tools to create and conduct science experiments. Children investigate properties of matter, mix concoctions, make predictions, log results, and develop foundational knowledge of numbers, measurements, geometry, and algebra. Families receive email communication each week summarizing the campers’ unique experiences.

January 2 – 6, 2017

Ages: 4 – 8

9 a.m. – 2 p.m.; Extended Care 2 – 4 p.m.

Camp Theme: Imaginary Worlds

In Imaginary Worlds, campers delve into storytelling, theater, and performance. Children work collaboratively to create a story with original characters, and then turn it into a play, including prototyping and designing sets and costume making. Camp concludes with a performance of the child-created play. Families receive email communication each week summarizing the campers’ unique experiences.

Camp Theme: Outdoor Explorers

In Outdoor Explorers at Marin Art & Garden Center, campers learn about the natural world through exploration of natural habitats, and nature-related art projects and science experiments. In this outdoor camp, children explore the Marin Art & Garden Center’s 11-acre site, including its Habitat Garden, Edible Garden, and Butterfly Cottage.

Price: $425 for admission; $50 per day for extended care

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Camp (January 16)

Ages: 4 – 8

Camp Theme: Inventor’s Challenge

In Inventor’s Challenge, campers engage as makers and innovators on a series of engineering challenges intended to encourage curiosity, creativity, and scientific thinking. Camp activities include creating blueprints, prototyping inventions, tinkering with old electronics, solving puzzles, and collaborating on engineering challenges. Families receive email communication each week summarizing the campers’ unique experiences.

Price: $125 for general admission; $50 per day for extended care

February Break Weeklong Camp (February 20 – 24)

February 20 – 24, 2017

Ages: 4 – 8

9 a.m. – 2 p.m.; Extended Care 2 – 4 p.m.

Camp Theme: Fort Building

In Fort Building, campers learn design and engineering principles to create real forts. Children prototype and create forts using various materials, such as wood, fabric, nails, hammers, and paint. Families receive email communication each week summarizing the campers’ unique experiences.

Price: $470 for general admission (includes $20 materials fee); $50 per day for extended care

Camp Policy

Cancellations: There is a basic $50 cancellation fee per camp/per child assessed to all customer requested refunds at any time. Camp fees are 50% refundable (less the basic cancellation fee noted above) if requested up to 3 weeks before the start of the session in which your child is enrolled. No refunds will be given after that time.

Scholarships for Discovery Camps

The Bay Area Discovery Museum is committed to removing the barriers some families face in accessing high-quality, educational experiences for their children both in and out of school. A limited number of partial scholarships are available based on financial need. Scholarships are awarded on a sliding scale and a first-come, first-served basis.
