Center for Childhood Creativity Releases Creativity Trend Report

Summary of innovative creativity development research for children’s product designers and education leaders

Sausalito, CA – The Center for Childhood Creativity (CCC), the research division of the Bay Area Discovery Museum, launched its first edition of the Creativity Trend Report, a new biannual research report that synthesizes and distills high-caliber research from some of the most prominent scholars in the fields of creativity and developmental science.

While there have been great advances in empirical research on how children learn over the last three decades, the CCC noticed that it often takes years to disseminate this new information to mainstream media, and even longer to influence how children’s products are being designed. With this in mind, the CCC created the Creativity Trend Report to help better align children’s products and content development.

The Creativity Trend Report features summaries of innovative and recently published research for children’s product and media designers, education leaders, and curriculum developers—all who have limited time and access to sift through the volumes of research published in academic journals.

The first report features three research topics: early math skills, the importance of divergent thinking in the creative process, and how to nurture helping behaviors in children.

The research topics featured in this report were selected by determining the most commonly used keywords (e.g., “divergent thinking”) in leading peer-reviewed journals from the years 2014 – 2016 in the fields of creativity and developmental psychology. With the guidance of four academic advisors, this list of keywords was distilled to identify a subset of trending topics that have strong empirical evidence and applicability.

About the Center for Childhood Creativity

The Center for Childhood Creativity (CCC) was founded in 2011 by the Bay Area Discovery Museum (BADM) to bridge the gap between academic research in the fields of neuroscience, education, psychology, and creativity studies with the practitioners charged with raising a generation of future innovators. CCC works at a national scale to advance research in the field of creativity development and to put this research into practice for the benefit of children, caretakers, and educators. CCC authors white papers that synthesize key academic studies; partners with outside researchers to facilitate research at BADM; presents at leading industry conferences; and provides advisory services to schools, museums, libraries, nonprofits, and companies that directly influence children’s development.
